This past summer I’ve photographed several families who live in or have visited Jeju. For this blog I’m showcasing images from three family shoots. The Daly Family I worked with the Daly family before they left for summer vacation. We met at Hyeopjae beach a little before sunset and had a good time taking some casual…
Just after their wedding in Singapore, newly weds Huiling and Kai came with seven of their friends to Jeju for a little vacation. They kindly invited me to their luncheon where I photographed their Jeju wedding reception in style. We met at Mint, a classy, fine-dining restaurant near the Phoenix Island hotel in Seopjikoji….
Eva and Vincent came to Jeju to celebrate their 2nd Wedding Anniversary. I helped them capture some great memories to mark their special occasion on what proved to be an arduous but fun day of shooting. You may be wondering why I would describe a simple anniversary photo session as arduous; it’s because no one…
A fun-loving couple from Hong Kong + two great outdoor locations = an entertaining and successful Jeju engagement photo session. A couple of weeks before Patty and Raymond came to Jeju from Hong Kong, Patty messaged my Facebook page and asked whether I could photograph their pre-wedding photos. She told me that something had come…
At the end of March, I captured Lawrence and Jennifer’s Jeju pre-wedding session down in Jungmun. Their love for each other shined throughout the shoot and we ended up with many great images at the end of the day. The theme for this loving couple from Hong Kong’s Jeju pre-wedding shoot was flowers and nature, and despite the fact that…
A couple of weeks ago I took some engagement photos with John and Lucy. Their playful, loving nature really showed during the shoot and we got some great photos to mark their special occasion. First off, happy St. Patrick’s Day if you’re reading this on the day it was posted! I thought it would be…
Wow! I love the photos from gallery two the best. We will have to check out these tea fields when we finally make it to Jeju! Great work!
Beautiful photos! I’m sure the couple are just too happy with that output. But you’re right, the focus of the photo shoot isn’t there. What did the couple say about not having the ring on any of the photos?
Look at all the green!!! Coming from New England, most engagement photos I’ve come across are always set near the ocean so its refreshing to see photos with that much greenery. I’m especially in love with the silhouette photos of the two. But the ones in gallery one where they’re taken from an angle that shows the rows and rows of tea are really breathtaking as well! I love how you made these a bit more playful too. It really highlights the joy of getting to spend the rest of your life with that one person and you really captured John’s devotion to Lucy. Wishing these two the very best!
Thanks Izzy! Having a couple who is playful (and similar to my personality) makes things go much smoother during a shoot.
Thanks Wendy! Because John is a friend, it’s no big deal that I didn’t get any shots with the ring. They will more formal photography in Taiwan so I’m sure they’ll get some ring shots then.
The photography by the tree is incredible. It shows how beautiful love and romance in a scene we all came from… nature. In any case, your photography is always stunning and I love it a lot! Have you ever seen Outlander? The photos by the rock definitely have an Outlander feel.
These photos are lovely and I think that setting is so unique to Korea! What I’d like to know is…was it not cold? Lucy looks like she’s dressed for summer 😀
Nope, I’ve never seen Outlander but I’ll have to check it out for the comparison. Thanks Gina!
By the end of the evening when it was almost completely dark it was a bit chilly, but actually the weather was quite nice that evening. Lucy said she wasn’t too cold but she may have been lying! We all had a good time though.
I love the last photo in Gallery #2! The silhouette of their heads and arms looked like a heart shape, it looks really great!
Thanks Jia Min! I didn’t notice how it looks like a heart. I’ll have to try that again sometime!
I’ve only seen live music on Jeju a few times so having the opportunity to watch and photograph Dave and The Specialists rock out was a welcoming occasion. I was asked by the guitarist of The Specialists, Adam, to head down to Geckos Bar in Jungmun to photograph their gig a couple of weeks ago. I had previously seen them play…
Wow, great photos as always Eric! You captured what looked like a really fun evening! That’s pretty cool that Dave was on American Idol! Thanks for sharing tips on taking dance photos as well. We will have to see if they have any shows when we come to Jeju in August! We would love to see them live if so! Thanks for sharing!
Wow! It seemed like an interesting night of talented musicians. Fantastic photography…the shots really capture the emotion of the music. Keep up the great work!
The streaking lines caught my attention, too. Your photos show the fun everyone there is having. And Jeju seems to have an active expat night life there. Enjoy!
You have a real talent for photography! I feel like I was there with you the way you take the pictures. I would also love to see the band play one day!
Awesome post Eric! I would imagine Jeju has a lot of visiting bands! It seems like the event scene is pretty lively there from the posts my Jeju friends put up. But the fact that its not that frequent probably makes occasions like this one all the more special. I do love how dynamic your photos are with the light flashes and how you zone into a shot with the vignettes. Beautiful editing work on top of great composition. Thanks for posting the video too! Its nice to get the visuals AND the sounds to accompany it. Feels like I was actually there 🙂
What an exciting and energetic evening! Living in rural Korea, I’m always jealous of your even posts on Jeju. I’ll be sure to check out Gecko’s whenever we finally get around to touring your island. Looks like a blast and your pictures have a wonderful sense of intimacy and motion.
Thanks Izzy! I do use a lot of vignetting in my shots and spend a lot of time editing photos. I really enjoy the process of it all. Just throwing this out there, but I began my lessons in editing travel photos from this book: VISION & VOICE – Refining Your Vision In Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, written by David Du Chemin, http://davidduchemin.com/books/. He’s a great author for travel photography.
A few weeks ago I had a photo shoot with Pat and Meghan. Apart from getting great shots of this friendly couple, my goal was to practice some posing techniques. Overall, we were all happy with this couple photography session, and I learned some things in the process. The Plan The initial plan was to go to Samyang beach in…
Hi Eric, thanks SO MUCH for sharing this post 🙂 It’s nice to read a blog that involves Korea and photography! I too am a photographer, though I primarily stick with landscape and architecture shots.
I enjoy shooting pictures of people, though it’s not my strong suit-like it is yours! I really agree that the simple background, particularly in #17 & 18, really does draw the audience in to the main focus of the picture–the people!
I also really like the natural expressions captured in #3 and #7–always nice to get a solid shot in between the smiles.
Great job and great information–thanks again for sharing!
I really enjoyed this post, Scott and I have to take our photos together using a tripod and a timer, so it can get tricky. We both have been trying to look up inspiration and different ways to pose together since neither of us our natural models! I find your information to be super helpful, so thanks! I love the photoshoot you did! My personal favorites are 3, 10,15, 17, 18 (that yellow background!!!!), and 22. We need to do more research and obviously just keep practicing! We will have to take a look at the books you recommended as well! Thanks so much for the helpful information and inspiration!
Thanks Megan, I’m glad you enjoyed the post and took something away from the information! Also, thanks for letting me know your personal favourites. Check out those books if you’re interested in taking more interesting shots of you and Scott!
Your use of prime lens for all those pics (save for the one in front of the temple stairs) is very inspiring. You see, I only have kit lens and prime lens and have no intention of buying (more of asking my husband to buy… Lol) more sophisticated ones. A photographer friend told me to just master prime lens and I can work around it even if subjects are not just portraits and close-ups. Thanks and congrats. Cheers to more opportunities for showcasing your photography skills.
What a lovely couple! You really were able to capture their love for one another which is great. Thank you for sharing the photos along with the tips!
The couple photography was absolutely stunning! I really loved 1,5, and 19. Those were my personal favorites. When doing outdoor shoots, mother nature sometimes has other plans for us. I really like the way you gave advice on how to do poses and how to make things better. I’m definitely saving this and trying out these things when I do some couple photos with my boyfriend again!
beautiful shots Eric and great tips for trying it out ourselves!
Wow, those couple shots are striking. I love the variations in the poses. As an amateur hobby photographer, I alway try to learn from the best so thanks for the tips you shared. I would be glad to meet you for a practical lesson if you don’t mind. I need to up my game in photography.
I learned so much from this post. I’ll be sure to use some of these tips in the future.
Your pictures are great!
Thanks for letting me know which shots you liked and why!
You’re right Wendy, using a prime lens is all about moving around and creating the image. It makes the photographer have to really think about the composition more, and thus create more creative images. No need to upgrade lenses, just practice more!
Thanks for letting me know which shots you liked Gina! I hope my information proves useful for you at some point!
Thanks William, and yes if you are ever in Jeju, I could give you a 1 to 1 lesson on how to take better photos! Email me if you’re interested, I’d love to help you improve.
Again, I am loving your couple photography! Such beautiful images! My favorite include the bamboo and canola fields! I also like that blue wall you had Lawrence stand in front of! This was the perfect time of year to take those photos! Since we don’t have a personal photographer (well Scott kind of is) we set up our tripod and take our own couple images, these photos make me want to go out this weekend and get some cool nature shots! Thanks for sharing Eric!
What a beautiful session! Love the locations and the fact that you’re not afraid to shoot during the brightest part of the day! Did you/Do you use an assistant by chance?
Beautiful photos! I love the variety of settings here! Great job!
Oh wow, what a creative and beautiful shoot! It’s so great that you were able to scout/know such beautiful locations for this pre-wedding shoot. You obviously put a lot of care and planning into this shoot and it shines through every photo. This couple is lucky to have had their photos done by such a talented photographer, and these pictures will probably be on display for years to come in their home.
Hi Eric!
What lovely photographs. I thought that you did an amazing job, creating such diverse looks throughout the shoot. I loved the blue wall and thought it created such a unique background from the rest of your photographs. Spring is such a beautiful time here in Korea!
Lawrence & Jennifer looked like dream clients, and you created beautiful images for them. Well done!
All these photos are simply stunning. I liked all of them except for the walking across the street one. I didn’t like the cars and people in the background, but other than that, it was amazing. Jeju’s flowers always look so delicate to me. I would love to take lessons from you on photography.
What a lovely couple! I really love that photo of them crossing the road – it’s a great candid-looking moment and I love the happiness on their faces. Beautiful photos – you captured their love in a great way!
I love the photo of them seemingly veiled by those brown tall weeds. Lovely photos you have! I do agree that you have made a good collection for them and in different settings, too. Great job!
